Sustainability
From the very conception of this community shop, sustainability in its broadest sense has been of fundamental importance as demonstrated by the following examples:
The very existence of the shop helps supports our local community in remaining a living functioning community.
Our decision to use local suppliers as much as possible supports local businesses including new small businesses and also keeps the environmental ill effects of transporting goods to a minimum.
In recent years the stock committee has looked at various aspects of minimising environmental damage: examples include our looking at the palm oil content of foods we sell, exploring ways to decrease plastic waste and selling certain products that are environmentally friendly.
We are continuing to explore this important topic. Ideas from customers and volunteers are most welcome. Sustainability is a complex matter with differing needs and priorities. We do have to keep in mind that in addition to considering our environmental impact, we also have to remain financially viable and must continue to attract and hold on to our vitally important customers and volunteers.
